War Correspondents

On Monday February 13th at 6.30 PM, Amsterdam-based Café Restaurant Dauphine opens its doors for the War Correspondents Event. It is the first time that an American event for correspondents in conflict zones is hosted in the Netherlands. Jeroen Oerlemans, a Dutch photojournalist who tragically died while on the job in Libya last year October, was the driving force behind this first Dutch edition.

Proceeds for charity

Proceeds from ticket sales, as well as a linked photography auction, benefit the nonprofit organization Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues (RISC). RISC is dedicated to promoting the safety of freelance journalists in conflict zones. Obviously Jeroen’s tragic death has placed this event and the necessity of it in a completely different light.

Panel Discussion

At Dauphine, you can attend the panel discussion between leading journalists as

Sander van Hoorn (NOS) and Joanie de Rijke (who experienced the dangers at first hand during her work as a journalist). They will be joined by photographer Teun Voeten, cameraman Joris Hentenaar and writer and former NRC correspondent in Afghanistan Bette Dam, in a discussion which will focus on managing the risks of being a reporter in conflict zones. Former war correspondent Steve Hindy will moderate the discussion. For tickets and updates please visit our event Facebook page here.

Photography Auction

From the 1st of February the War Correspondents Event linked auction will launch on the online platform Catawiki. Renowned national and international photographers have provided work to this auction. The photos will be exhibited during the panel discussion at Dauphine where you can bid on them directly. The auction closes on February 17th.

About RISC

RISC provides free first aid training and medical kits for those working in dangerous and remote areas to help mitigate the many physical threats they face in the field. RISC focuses on freelance journalists because they often miss the support of an experienced, well-equipped organization. For more information please visit: www.risctraining.org

About the War Correspondents Event

The War Correspondents Event is an initiative of Lily Hindy, daughter of Steve Hindy, a former war reporter and founder of the Brooklyn Brewery. Since 2013 some of the most renowned American war reporters participated in the different editions of the event. Normally, the event is held in Steve Hindy's brewery in Brooklyn, New York.

Organization Dutch edition War Correspondents Event

During the realisation of this first Dutch edition Jeroen Oerlemans has worked closely with Lily Hindy and Bier&cO (importer/distributor of Brooklyn Brewery). Jeroen has made an enormous contribution to the composition of the panel and the content of the program. After his sudden death his job is taken over by Teun Voeten.
